Sunrise and Sunset... The mystery:
Scenic Rim Photography

I was 4 or 5 yrs old sitting on the farmhouse verandah one hot summers evening, with my parents, grandparents, uncles & aunts at the end of a Christmas Day watching the sky turn to a brilliant display of reds, yellows and orange when I heard my grandfather say, very quietly to no-one in particular, "red sky at night, shepherds delight"....the adults gathered on that verandah all murmured and nodded in agreement. I was totally mystified but intrigued at this "secret code" that had passed between the adults.

For years I wondered at the mystery of those whispered words, and it was finally my mother who filled in the blanks for me and explained the saying, used by sea faring folk and farm folk alike.

"Red sky at night....Shepherds (Sailors) delight" meaning a fine hot day ahead.

"Red sky in the morning....Shepherds (Sailors) warning" meaning a change is on the way, probably a storm.

Take note next time, you will find it is generally around the mark.
